Updated: Savon Huggins out for rest of regular season

Freshman running back Savon Huggins has already made a big impact for Rutgers this season, becoming the team’s second-leading rusher through nine games. However, Huggins sustained an awkward-looking knee injury Saturday night against South Florida that may sideline him for the rest of the season.

Coach Greg Schiano wouldn’t specify the extent of Huggins’ injury after RU’s 20-17 overtime victory over the Bulls, but he didn’t exactly sound optimistic about his running back, who had to be helped off the field in the second quarter.

I’m worried about Savon,” Schiano said. “I don’t know factually now but we’ll have to get tests done. I’m more than concerned.”

He should be. RU’s athletic department announced Monday morning that Huggins would indeed miss the rest of the regular season with the knee injury, which has yet to be specified. It is possible Huggins could return for the team’s bowl game.

The Scarlet Knights’ offense has struggled this season and losing Huggins for any amount of time would be a tough blow. Huggins has 56 carries for just 146 yards this season, but has five touchdowns on the ground.
