It’s official: Old Urbans vs. New Urbans in Gator Bowl

Or, if you want to get technical, the Taxslayer.com Gator Bowl.

Regardless of what sponsor you slap on the bowl, though, there will be an overriding theme heading into this postseason game. Wanna take a stab at what it might be?

With bowl announcements flying left and right, both Ohio State and Florida confirmed Sunday evening that they will square off in the Gator Bowl Jan. 2 in Jacksonville, Fla. The matchup has been rumored for weeks, gaining steam in tandem with the pace of speculation as to who would be the next head coach of the Buckeyes.

Luke Fickell will coach the Buckeyes in the Gator Bowl while Will Muschamp while do the honors for Florida, but the real storyline for a game involving a pair of 6-6 teams will be the former and future head coach of the teams.

As noted in the release, this will be just the second meeting all-time between UF and the Buckeyes. Urban Meyer was the coach of the Gators the first time, a 41-14 win in the BcS title game following the 2006 season. As you may have heard, Meyer was introduced as OSU’s new head coach last week, less than a year after leaving the Gators due to what was officially described as health issues/desire to spend more time with his family.

The Gator Bowl will come one year and one day after Meyer’s last game as UF’s head coach, a 37-24 win over Joe Paterno‘s Penn State Nittany Lions.

You think Meyer’s name might come up a coupla (thousand) times in the run-up to the game and during the telecast? As for whether Meyer will show up at the game, Fickell said during a press conference Sunday evening that an appearance by his future boss is undecided.
