One-and-done: New NIU OC resigns after just one day

Well, that didn’t take long, did it?

One day after it was announced that he would be leaving Rutgers as the wide receivers coach to take over as offensive coordinator for Northern Illinois, P.J. Fleck has resigned from duties, coach David Doeren confirmed in a statement Friday.

Fleck would have taken over for Matt Canada, who moved on in the same capacity to Wisconsin.

“P.J. called today and said he does not feel he’s ready to be an offensive coordinator,” Doeren’s statement read. “It’s unfortunate, but what’s best for our program is to move in a different direction and that’s what I’m going to do.

“Everything happens for a reason and the result of this will make NIU football even better.”

There was no other reason given as to why Fleck decided to resign, nor has it been announced if he will regain his old job with Rutgers, where he had spent two seasons.

This is indeed a surprising move.
