WVU hires Ark. St.'s defensive coordinator

After filling the position back in early January, Arkansas State’s Gus Malzahn officially has a vacancy at defensive coordinator as February nears a close.

In a press release, West Virginia confirmed previous reports by announcing that Keith Patterson will join the Mountaineer coaching staff. The release states that Patterson’s official responsibilities, along with those of the other new WVU hires, will be announced once the coaching staff is complete.

Patterson’s hiring by Arkansas State was announced Jan. 4. At the time of his hiring, Patterson was serving as Pittsburgh’s interim head coach.

“Keith has had a lot of successful years coaching at some great programs, both at the college and high school levels,” head coach Dana Holgorsen said. “His years of experience in developing players and defenses will be an invaluable resource to our program, while his background in Texas and Oklahoma will only add to our recruiting efforts.”

Prior to his one season at Pitt, Patterson spent eight years at Tulsa, including the final five seasons in which he served as the co-defensive coordinator.
