Ellington to again be a two-sport athlete for ‘Cocks

Two weeks ago, Bruce Ellington announced that he was leaving the South Carolina football program in order to concentrate on his “first love”, basketball. A week later, his high school coach said he was reconsidering that decision.

Today? He’s apparently back to being a two-sport athlete.

Following practice Tuesday, head coach Steve Spurrier confirmed that Ellington has officially decided to again play both football and basketball. To put an exclamation on his brief sabbatical from the gridiron, Ellington was in pads practicing with his teammates this afternoon. It was Ellington’s first time practicing with the football team this spring.

The move comes on the same day USC announced it had officially hired away Frank Martin from Kansas State to coach its hoops team.

The Gamecocks will certainly be able to accommodate a player with Ellington’s offensive versatility, regardless of the flip-flopping.

During the 2011 season, the wide receiver/"Wildcat” quarterback/kick returner posted 707 all-purpose yards for the Gamecocks, with 211 receiving yards, 106 rushing yards and 390 yards on returns. For that, he was named to the SEC’s All-Freshman squad.
