Kansas kicks off Charlie Weis era with spring game

For the first time since the end of 2009, Charlie Weis was the head coach of a football program.

(Quick note: that picture of Weis is too priceless not to use)

And in front of a crowd of roughly 15,000, the Kansas Jayhawks kicked off the Weis era with a 45-0 win by the Blue team. Weis’ two offseason acquisitions, quarterbacks Dayne Crist and Jake Heaps, combined for over 260 yards passing and a touchdown.

He can make every throw, and he didn’t look too rusty to me,” Weis said of Crist. “I thought he slung it around pretty good. He knows how to run the offense, he knows the operation. He gets us out of trouble when it’s a bad call. I was generally pleased.”

Running back Tony Pierson was the offensive MVP with 141 yards on just seven carries.

I can’t imagine Kansas is going to see significant improvement in the win-loss columns this season under Weis after an abysmal 2011 campaign, but the Jayhawks already have more offensive firepower this year that should at least keep them competitive in a few games.
