Have we ever mentioned that college football coaches really despise this time of the year, the three months or so between the end of spring practice and the start of summer camp?
Exhibit No. (insert absurdly figure here) of this phenomenon comes courtesy of Virginia Tech, which was forced to suspend a member of the Hokies due to an off-field “incident” earlier this year. And by “incident” we mean “trumped-up, two-wheeled felony.”
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Thursday that redshirt freshman defensive end Dadi Nicolas was arrested Friday on a charge of felony grand larceny. The arrest and charge stemmed from a situation that occurred back in May.
What led to the issue? The Washington Post succinctly answers that question:According to the arrest warrant filed by the Virginia Tech police department at the Montgomery County General District Court in Blacksburg, Nicolas was charged as a principal in the crime, which in Virginia means he was an accomplice who did not actually participate in the crime. It is still a second-degree felony charge, however.
The arrest warrant said the object in question was a bicycle, and that the incident happened at a campus dining hall.
As a result of the felony arrest, Nicolas has been suspended indefinitely from the football program.
“Virginia Tech redshirt freshman Dadi Nicolas was immediately suspended indefinitely from the football team upon his arrest in conjunction with University Policy 1035,” a school spokesman told the Times-Dispatch in an e-mail. “Under university policy, a student-athlete arrested and charged with a felony is automatically suspended until charges are dropped.”
