Hawaii lands Utah, Duke transfers

A day after our nation celebrated its 236th birthday, a school from one of the two non-contiguous states has an additional reason to continue the celebration.

In a press release, Hawaii announced earlier this week that offensive lineman Kapua Sai and quarterback Sean Schroeder have decided to transfer to the school and play for the Warriors. The former, who’s actually the brother of one of the Warriors’ 2012 signees, comes to the island from Utah, while the latter is transferring in from Duke.

As both of the players have already graduated from their previous institutions, they will be eligible to play immediately in 2012.

“These two young men have a chance to help us right away,” head coach Norm Chow said in a statement. “Both are highly skilled at their position and for one reason or another, they didn’t see much playing time.”

The additions of the pair of players is not the least bit surprising as each has been connected to Hawaii over the past couple of months.

Sai redshirted at Utah in 2009 and played in four games as a freshman and sophomore the next two seasons, the last of which saw Chow serve as the Utes’ offensive coordinator. Schroeder also redshirted as a true freshman in 2009, but didn’t see any game action the past two seasons.

Sai, a Honolulu native, and Schroeder are the second and third players connected to FBS programs that have moved on to Hawaii in the past two months; in mid-May, it was reported that one-time five-star Michigan signee Demar Dorsey would play for the Warriors this season.
