New playoff format to be dubbed ‘National Championship Series’?

When it comes to the future of college football’s postseason, one of the few knowns at this time is that the BcS will cease to exist and a playoff consisting of four teams will begin following the 2014 regular season.

One of myriad unknowns? The name of the playoff format that will take the place of the Bowl Championship Series, which carries with it too much baggage to be attached to the revamped postseason.

For those concerned over this kind of minutia, Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby has seemingly come to the rescue. In an interview with the San Antonio Express-News, Bowlsby said that he’s “very excited about what has happened with the BCS, which will be probably known as the national championship series going forward.”

So, there you have it. From “Bowl Championship Series” to “National Championship Series.” Maybe.

My initial gut reaction to the proposed name? Meh. As with the format itself, anything’s better than the BcS and all it had come to stand for.

So, what are your thoughts? Like the “NCS”? Loathe it?
