Paul Rhoads says QB battle is a dead heat

Iowa State released its updated two-deep last week. Not surprisingly, Steele Jantz and Jared Barnett were 1a and 1b on the quarterback depth chart.

That doesn’t figure to change any time soon.

ISU coach Paul Rhoads said Monday during Big 12 media days that the two will continue to battle for the starting job all the way through preseason camp. Neither separated themselves during spring practices after the two combined for an average completion percentage of just over 50 percent last season.

Yikes.

“We need more accuracy at that spot,” Rhoads said. “and to stop throwing it to different colored jerseys.”

Rhoads pointed out -- multiple times I might add -- that the Cyclones have one of the tougher schedules in the country. Even at home, ISU has Oklahoma and West Virginia, the two teams expected to finish atop the Big 12 standings. If Iowa State is going to get more than three conference wins this season, QB play is going to have to improve significantly.

Rhoads didn’t sound overly confident that was going to happen this year.
