Spurrier says QB Shaw’s shoulder will be re-evaluated Wednesday

South Carolina handled East Carolina with ease this past Saturday, beating the Pirates 48-10 without starting quarterback Connor Shaw. In Shaw’s absence, backup Dylan Thompson tossed for over 300 yards and three scores.

Seeing as USCe’s next game is against an even worse UAB team, there’s no need to rush Shaw, who is recovering from a shoulder contusion he sustained in the Gamecocks’ season opener against Vanderbilt, back to the field. But Steve Spurrier said Sunday that team doctors will go ahead and evaluate him later this week.

“Connor will practice when the trainers say he can practice and the doctors say he’s OK to go,” Spurrier said. “Right now, I doubt that he will do much until Wednesday or so, and we’ll see how he looks then.”

Shaw tried throwing last Saturday during warm-ups, but it was pretty clear he wasn’t ready to go. Even if he feels good come Wednesday, it might behoove Spurrier to keep Shaw as a reserve until Missouri comes to town on Sept. 22.
