WVU’s Geno Smith becomes school’s all-time leading passer

Heading into today’s game against James Madison, Geno Smith needed 374 yards through the air to surpass Marc Bulger’s school record of 8,153 career yards.

Smith did it in about three quarters. He finished the day with 411 yards on a surgical 34-of-39 effort with five touchdowns. Assuming my math is correct (yikes), Smith now has 8,189 yards all-time.

The senior is having an RGIII-ish start to the 2012 season. Through two games, Smith has as many incompletions as he does touchdowns (nine). In 2011, RGIII had 13 touchdowns and 12 incompletions through the first three games.

Yes, Smith has played against nobodies -- there’s no way he maintains those kinds of numbers heading into Big 12 play -- but he’s quickly emerging as a serious Heisman candidate to challenge the preseason favorite, Matt Barkley.

No. 9 WVU beat the Dukes 42-12.
