Tar Heel walk-on hit with felony, other charges

And get this: not only is he a walk-on, but he’s a punter to boot (so to speak).

While that combination in only the most technical of terms qualifies him as a football player, it’s enough to note. And enough to trigger a reset of the “Days Without An Arrest” ticker as well.

According to Raleigh News & Observer, North Carolina non-scholarship player Nicholas Weiler was arrested for felony assault as well as a handful of misdemeanor charges following an incident early Sunday morning. In addition to the felony, the 18-year-old punter was charged with simple assault, resisting arrest, underage possession of alcohol and possession of a fake ID.

The felony charge allegedly arose after a police officer stated in a police report he witnessed Weiler “punch a victim in the face.” After that?

The officer wrote that Weiler “fled on foot” after police approached him. Weiler had previously assaulted another victim, police said, and was consuming alcohol.

Weiler, who has not played in a game this season as a true freshman, has been suspended indefinitely by first-year head coach Larry Fedora.
