Felony charge dropped, Cobb back with Red Raiders

After being charged with felony burglary in late August, Daniel Cobb was dismissed from the Texas Tech football program.

Less than two months later, though, the linebacker is back on the roster.

The Lubbock District Attorney’s office recently dropped all charges against Cobb and, Sunday night, the redshirt junior practice with his teammates for the first time this season. Cobb is expected to make his 2012 debut this weekend against TCU.

Following his weekly Monday press conference, and saying he’s “proud of what he stood for,” head coach Tommy Tuberville addressed the player’s situation and his return to the Red Raiders.

“I know he spent the last two and a half months trying to clear his name from a bad situation,” Tuberville said by way of the Dallas Morning News. “When you do something like that and you’re accused of something, my policy is to make sure that everything’s above board and that they have to clear their name. He’s done it all on his own.

“He’s been cleared by the district attorney. No wrongdoing whatsoever. He’s had to clear his name. The kid’s going to graduate in two months (after) three and a half years in business. Never gave us one bit of problem. But it cost him two and a half months of playing college football and six games.

Cobb had been accused of using force to enter a female’s apartment and physically assaulted the alleged victim. The precise reason behind the DA’s decision to drop the charges is unclear.

Since coming to Lubbock as a three-star member of Tech’s 2009 recruiting class, Cobb has played in 21 games. He started seven games in 2011 and finished third on the team in tackles.

The addition of Cobb will be a boon to a defense that, seven weeks into the season, ranks fourth in total defense and seventeenth in scoring defense, statistics made all the more impressive when the fact that Tech faced the high-powered offenses of Oklahoma and Virginia the past two games is factored in.
