Updated: Maryland loses second QB to season-ending ACL tear

Updated 4:00 p.m. ET: Bad news if you’re Maryland. The worst possible scenario for freshman quarterback Perry Hills has come true.

Following an MRI Monday morning to determine the extent of a knee injury Hill suffered during Saturday’s loss to North Carolina State, the university announced that Hills has a torn ACL is done for the season. Hills was replacing C.J. Brown, who also sustained a torn ACL in August.

“I am very disappointed for Perry,” coach Randy Edsall said in the release. “I was proud of the way he stepped in this season and led our team. Perry is a great competitor and I know how strongly his teammates feel about him. We will do everything we can to support him through the rehab process.”

With both Hills and Brown out, the Terps must turn to Caleb Rowe and Devin Burns, who was originally a wide receiver to start the year.

For the second time in the past two months, Maryland is faced with the possibility of losing its starting quarterback to a significant knee injury.

In the second quarter of Terps’ first ACC loss of the 2012 season Saturday, Perry Hills was knocked of the game with a knee injury after attempting to make a tackle following an interception. From the descriptions in various media accounts, it appears the true freshman, at the very least, hyperextended his knee.

Whether that’s the extent of it is to be determined as, the Washington Post reports, Hills will undergo an MRI Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

Hills has started every game this season for the Terps, completing just over 57 percent of his passes for 1,336 yards and eight touchdowns. While he has thrown seven interceptions, he’s thrown just four in the past six games after his first-ever start netted three.

A three-star member of Maryland’s 2012 recruiting class, Hills took over as the starter a couple of weeks prior to the start of the season after C.J. Brown tore his ACL in mid-August.
