Wazzu suspends leading receiver

A rough (to be kind) start to Mike Leach‘s coaching tenure has taken yet another downward turn.

Rumors surfaced overnight that Marquess Wilson had walked out of a conditioning workout Sunday, with the speculation being that he had subsequently quit the team.

It’s unclear whether that is or will be the case, but there is one certainty: the wide receiver has been indefinitely suspended by Leach. The school confirmed the punitive measure Monday, although no specific reason was given for the suspension.

If the suspension lingers, or Wilson indeed quits the team, it would be a significant blow to a Wazzu team that can ill afford it. The 6-4, 190-pound junior leads the team in receptions (52), receiving yards (813) and receiving touchdowns (five).

The two-win Cougars, losers of six straight, will face No. 17 UCLA in Pullman Saturday night.
