Aztecs go Long with contract extension

Tapped as Brady Hoke‘s successor in January of 2011, Rocky Long has landed some well-earned recognition for the job he’s done in his short time at San Diego State.

In a release, SDSU announced that Long has agreed to a contract extension with the school. Long is now signed through the 2017 season.

The Aztecs have gone 17-9 in Long’s first two seasons at the school. SDSU notes in the release that Long’s winning percentage (.654) is third in school history behind Don Coryall (.840 from 1961-72) and Claude Gilbert (.697 from 1973-80).

In 2012, the Aztecs went 9-4 and claimed a share of the Mountain West title. It was SDSU’s first conference championship since an outright WAC title in 1986.

Long was named the MWC’s Coach of the Year following the 2012 regular season.

“I am very excited about the future of Aztec football under Rocky Long’s leadership,” SDSU athletic director Jim Sterk said in a statement. “Coach Long has continued the growth and the success in all aspects of our program, while gaining more regional and national interest. I look forward to next season as we look to defend our Mountain West title.”
