Michigan’s backup QB out indefinitely with torn ACL

Devin Gardner is expected to slide into Michigan’s starting quarterback job for 2013, but the depth behind him could be in serious trouble.

The university announced on Monday that backup QB Russell Bellomy suffered an ACL tear during Friday’s spring practice and is out indefinitely.

“It’s unfortunate, especially for a kid who battled through a tough injury last season and was having a really good spring,” said head coach Brady Hoke. “We’ll continue to support Russell and look forward to having him back on the field.”

Bellomy saw limited game action last year as a redshirt freshman, most of it in a loss to Nebraska in which he threw as many completions as interceptions (three). But, bad experience is still experience, and Bellomy was the only projected backup to enter 2013 with any.

With Bellomy out, the Wolverines could look to true freshman Shane Morris to act as Gardner’s primary backup out of an inexperienced group.

Last month, Michigan lost linebacker Jake Ryan to a torn ACL.
