Jimbo not yet ready to annoint Winston as FSU’s QB

Clint Trickett‘s decision to transfer out of Florida State was a clear indicator to most that Jameis Winston had taken the Seminoles’ starting quarterback job and grabbed it firmly around its neck.

While that will likely be the end-game, that the former four-star recruit opens the 2013 season under center, Winston’s head coach isn’t yet ready to declare it publicly.

Speaking at a booster get-together Thursday, Jimbo Fisher maintained that Winston, Jacob Coker and Sean Maguire remain in play as the successor to E.J. Manuel under center for the Seminoles. And we’re going to assume the quotes that follow were said with a straight face and made with the forethought of avoiding any sense of entitlement on Winston’s part entering the summer.

“We’ve got three good quarterbacks, and we’ll continue to grow and see where that progresses down the road,” Fisher said by way of the Tallahassee Democrat.. “We’ve still got three very talented quarterbacks.”

That said, and as we and most everyone else has noted, it would be a monumental upset if Winston did not take the field as the starter when FSU opens the 2013 season at Pittsburgh on Labor Day.
