Tide’s backup QB likely transferring to Toledo

Rumors that backup Alabama quarterback Phillip Ely would transfer from the Tide began circulating toward the start of the new year. It would appear those rumors have come to fruition.

Ryan Bass of Bright House Sports reports that Ely will transfer from UA to Toledo, where he will sit out the 2013 season and have two years of eligibility remaining once 2014 begins. Though there has been no official confirmation of the move from either school, Ely did tweet the following:

“Ready to make a change in my life for the better and I thank everyone who has supported me through this process. Go Rockets!”

With A.J. McCarron thoroughly entrenched as the Tide’s starting QB for another season and Blake Sims serving as backup, there wasn’t much playing time to be had for Ely.

A three-star member of Alabama’s 2011 class, Ely attempted just four passes last season for 42 yards and a touchdown.
