Injury knocks starting Michigan DB out at least two weeks

Michigan lost a starting wide receiver earlier this month to a season-ending injury. While it’s not as serious as that, the injury bug has now bitten the Wolverines on the other side of the ball as well.

UM head coach Brady Hoke confirmed Monday that starting safety Courtney Avery underwent arthroscopic surgery on his knee Saturday. The procedure and subsequent rehab will keep the senior off the field for at least two weeks.

That means, at minimum, Avery will miss the opener against Central Michigan and, possibly, the following weekend’s home game against Notre Dame.

Over the weekend, Avery was voted by his teammates as one of UM’s captains for the 2013 season.

Everything went well,” Hoke said of the surgery. “He is in great spirits, and he’ll be back on the field soon.”

Avery had moved from cornerback to safety during summer camp.

In 2012, Avery started five of the games in which he played. Avery has played in 39 games over the past three years, starting 13 of those contests.
