Walk-on RB earns starting job at Rutgers

After finishing second on the team in rushing in 2012, Savon Huggins was expected to shoulder much of Rutgers’ running game load with the departure of Jawan Jamison. While that might end up being the case on down the road, it’s not in the here and now.

On the depth chart released Monday morning, Paul James was listed as the starter at running back, with former four-star recruit Huggins listed as his backup. The abrupt shift came after James rushed for 182 yards on 22 carries in the season-opening loss to Fresno State Thursday.

In that overtime loss, Huggins rushed for just 15 yards on six carries.

James, a walk-on redshirt sophomore, had played in just two games prior to the opener, carrying the ball five times for 22 yards previously.
