Texas Tech playing coy with starting QB, too

A couple of days after Oklahoma State declined to name a starter at the position ahead of its next game, it’s another Big 12 team’s turn to keep its quarterbacking cards close to its vest.

In his second start after replacing the injured Baker Mayfield, Davis Webb passed for 462 yards in Texas Tech’s win over West Virginia this past weekend. That performance came a week after he put up 411 in a win against Iowa State.

Despite back-to-back 400-yard games, head coach Kliff Kingsbury is not ready to name a starter for the crucial game conference game against Oklahoma coming up, preferring instead to see how Mayfield’s recovery from the knee injury progresses throughout the week.

We’ll see,” Kingsbury said Monday when asked about his starter for the OU game. “We’ll see how Baker feels and take it from there.”

Mayfield suffered the injury in the Oct. 5 win over Kansas and has been sidelined since.

In 201 attempts this season, Mayfield has a pass efficiency rating of 136 while Webb’s at 143.8 in 176 attempts. The former has thrown eight touchdown passes, the latter 11. Both of the players, each of who is a freshman, have thrown five interceptions apiece.
