Cal sticking with Jared Goff at QB

After a week’s worth of speculation that a change could be in the offing, Sonny Dykes is standing by his quarterbacking man. For now.

The Cal head coach confirmed in a release Friday that Jared Goff will remain the Golden Bears’ starting quarterback. The decision comes a few days after Dykes “reopened” the competition for the starting job, with Zach Kline once again entering the fray and casting doubt on whether Goff would continue to be the guy at the position.

The true freshman Goff has started all seven games of the season. In the first three starts of his collegiate career, Goff passed for a combined 1,306 yards and led the nation in passing yardage at the time. In his fifth start, he passed for a school-record 504 yards.

However, he was pulled in the fourth game in favor of Kline after a 3-for-7, 11-yard performance against Oregon. Those struggles continued the past two games as Goff has thrown for just a total of 435 yards, or less than he has in three individual games this season.

Kline, a redshirt freshman, is listed as Goff’s backup on the depth chart heading into today’s game against Washington.
