Locker-room fight left one Cal player hospitalized

In the midst of a miserable first season under Sonny Dykes, the Cal football program has officially hit rock bottom off the football as well.

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that, late last week, two players were involved in a locker-room scuffle. The brouhaha ended with freshman running back Fabiano Hale hospitalized with undisclosed injuries and a police investigation into the incident.

UC-Berkeley police have declined to identify the other player involved or state whether charges will be filed.

“It was one-on-one,” police Lt. Marc DeCoulode told the Chronicle. “We know who the suspect is.”

The paper wrote that "[t]he incident happened after a workout involving players who don’t travel with the team.”

In the wake of this report, the university released a statement (somewhat) addressing the situation:

We are cooperating fully with the investigation into an incident involving members of our football team. Our team culture is built on mutual respect for and accountability to each other.

There has been a lot of misinformation reported today that does need to be addressed:

  • A player was checked into the urgent care facility at the Tang Center on campus as soon as possible after an incident occurred by a member of our sports medicine staff.

  • Once full advised of the situation, a Cal physician, coach and administrator each contacted the player’s family prior to the family’s arrival at the hospital. In addition, the coach personally visited the player and his family at the hospital.

We are still in the process of gathering information but will not rush to judgment. We will have no further comment until the investigation is complete.
