Oklahoma won’t name a starting QB until Saturday

Oklahoma quarterback Blake Bell suffered an apparent head injury in his team’s 48-10 win over Iowa State this past weekend, but Sooners head coach Bob Stoops isn’t tipping his hand on which of his signal callers will get the start against Kansas State.

“Unsure about Blake until we get to practice and unsure about the other guys until we get to practice,” Stoops said of his overall injury situation. “Unsure who will be back and who won’t. The quarterback issue, it does us no possible good to define all of that today or Friday. We’ll just go into the game and hopefully have all of them ready.”

Bell got hurt early in the second quarter against the Cyclones and was replaced by redshirt freshman (and former starer) Trevor Knight, who completed 8 of 14 passes for 61 yards, and also rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Stoops liked what he saw out of Knight against ISU, which makes it seem likely he’ll ultimately get the starting nod.

“It’s natural in that the first two games to now, he did look much more comfortable in this game against Iowa State,” Stoops said of Knight. “And probably performed that way. It’s not surprising to us eight weeks down the road, you continue to practice, you continue to get better as you go through the year. He gets a chance to do it again and he’s more familiar with it. He knows what to expect and handled it great.”

Bell has 1,508 passing yards with 13 TDs and five picks this season, plus 255 rushing yards. He is 6-2 as a starter. Knight has 272 passing yards with four TDs, three interceptions and 309 rushing yards. He is 2-0 as a starter.
