DL Langston Newton moves on from UK to Purdue

One of the three mid-year enrollees announced by Purdue Monday will look and sound familiar to the fans of one SEC program.

The Boilermakers confirmed yesterday that, along with offensive lineman Kirk Barron and quarterback David Blough, defensive lineman Langston Newton is enrolled in school and will be eligible to participate in the spring practice sessions beginning March 6. While Barron and Blough are high school enrollees, Newton comes into the program as a transfer from Kentucky.

Newton, the brother of former UK quarterback Morgan Newton, transferred to Purdue in order to be closer to his ailing 87-year-old grandfather, his father told the West Lafayette Journal and Courier. The player, who played his high school football in Carmel, Ind., is in the process of appealing for a waiver that would grant him immediate eligibility to play in 2014. If the appeal is denied, Newton would be forced to sit out the upcoming season and retain two years of eligibility beginning in 2015.

A three-star member of UK’s 2012 recruiting class, Newton was ranked as the No. 40 strongside defensive end in the country and the No. 9 player at any position in the state of Indiana. He did not see the field during his two seasons in Lexington.
