Report: Greg Robinson to become San Jose State DC

Two days after interviewing for the vacant San Jose State defensive coordinator position, Greg Robinson has been hired by the Spartans, the Contra Costa Times is reporting.

The veteran defensive coordinator will replace Kenwick Thompson, who left SJSU to coach at Vanderbilt.

Robinson comes to the Bay Area after his second stint as the defensive coordinator at Texas. He replaced Manny Diaz two games into last season after the Longhorns gave up a school-record 550 rushing yards against BYU. He was also the Texas defensive coordinator in 2004. Prior to returning to Austin, he coached the Michigan defense for two seasons and was the Syracuse head coach for four seasons.

The Longhorns defense stabilized a bit under Robinson last fall, but it wasn’t enough to save Mack Brown’s job.

He’ll have his hands full trying to improve the Spartans defense, which finished 104th nationally in both scoring defense and total defense in 2013.
