Car accident leaves ECU DE Terrell Stanley in critical condition

Yet another winter storm that’s making its way across the South has, sadly, directly impacted a member of the East Carolina football program.

The school confirmed in a press release early Wednesday afternoon that ECU defensive end Terrell Stanley is listed in critical condition following an early-morning car accident. The accident, the details of which aren’t available, is said to be weather-related.

One of Stanley’s teammates, offensive lineman Ike Harris, was injured in the crash as well. Fortunately, Harris, who was initially listed in serious condition, was treated at and later released from a local hospital.

The accident happened at around six a.m. local time as the two were headed to a strength and conditioning workout on campus. Stanley was the driver of the vehicle, which police said crashed down an embankment.

Stanley started 12 games in 2013, finishing second on the team in sacks with seven. Harris started 12 games as well. Both players will be juniors in 2014.

UPDATED 4:31 p.m. ET: ECU head coach Ruffin McNeill has issued a statement addressing Stanley’s condition.

“Terrell is under the best medical care possible, and while he has showed signs of steadily improving, we ask that you keep him in your thoughts and prayers. His parents, sister and other family members are here with his teammates and coaches, and together we have been and will continue to be a force that runs deep with support and inspiration.”
