Miami investigating potential minor violation not related to pasta

At least one Miami assistant football coach may have committed a minor violation of NCAA rules according to the university. Miami announced the university is checking out a potential secondary violation and has committed to reporting any violations to the NCAA.

The alleged violation under review involves an assistant coach observing a voluntary workout on Friday. Because Miami has not begun spring workouts, this would be a violation of NCAA rules. Coaches and assistants are not permitted to observe or orchestrate offseason workouts. The unnamed assistant coach reportedly witnessed the workout from a distance, but this could still be classified as a violation under NCAA rules.

The alleged violation comes just months after the school has been placed on probation. The probation period for the school will be in effect for the next three years. Miami had been under NCAA investigation for two years before coming to the decision to place the school on probation rather than place any postseason bans on the football program. Because Miami is on probation, any violation of NCAA rules could carry a heavier punishment, although these types of violations rarely carry much of a punishment. That would be the likely result if the NCAA decides to enforce any penalty for any violations turned in by Miami.
