NCAA clears Baylor assistant of any recruiting violations

Baylor assistant football coach Kendal Briles did not commit any recruiting violations according to a recently concluded NCAA investigation. Briles was investigated for allegations of impermissible contact with a football recruit, which was detailed by Sports Illustrated.

“The facts did not support that any violation occurred,” Baylor athletic director Ian McCaw said in a statement.

Briles was investigated for making contact with Class of 2015 recruit J.W. Ketchum during a non-contact recruiting period last fall. The NCAA contacted Ketchum’s high school in Missouri City, Texas and were reported to be making contact with the talented quarterback. The violation in question was for contacting a junior recruit away from Baylor’s campus, which is a violation of NCAA rules.

Baylor’s AD also showed a concern for the impact this recent investigation could have on a student-athlete, because everyone has concern for the student-athletes of course. But McCaw does suggest Baylor is focused on going about their recruiting efforts fairly and within the rules while also putting on notice anyone who may be spreading a negative image about the program.

“We are committed to due diligence in reviewing and when warranted, investigating, every potential instance of alleged wrongdoing,” McCaw said. “We are also committed to holding accountable those who make unsubstantiated claims as best we can and will work within the appropriate channels to do so.”

Kendal is the son of Baylor head coach Art Briles.
