Missouri starting DT to undergo surgery for broken ankle

Missouri defensive tackle Matt Hoch, a starter last season and expected to be one once again in the fall, will have surgery to repair a broken ankle. Hoch shared the injury news himself by tweeting the news Saturday.

What a bittersweet day today. Passed the praxis but also severely broke the bone in my ankle at the scrimmage. Surgery tomorrow.

— Matt Hoch (@HokedEm89) April 5, 2014

Given the time of the tweet, that would set the surgery for today (Sunday). Hoch appeared in 13 games last season for the SEC East champions. He recorded 41 total tackles, splitting that number pretty evenly between solo tackles and assists. He recorded four tackles for a loss and three sacks as well.

At this time there is no timetable for his return, but this likely keeps him out for the remainder of the spring and gives him a chance to return for the fall. Because he started last season, there may be no need to rush him back because he was not competing for a starting job in 2014. Once he is healthy and ready to go, he should slide right back in to the starting role.
