Trick or treat? College Football Playoff rankings coming late October

The College Football Playoff selection committee will release its rankings starting October 28 to offer some transparency on where playoff contenders stand. Brett McMurphy of ESPN.com was first to report the target release date of the new ranking system, via Twitter.

The selection committee details are still being put together for the first year of operation in the new playoff era in major college football. This week in Dallas is seeing representatives from all conferences gather to take steps in putting details together for the new format. The committee was planning on organizing its own ranking system all along, but how often fans would get a look at those rankings was undetermined. As McMurphy reports, the new ranking will be released Tuesday nights.

It should be noted the ranking may not necessarily be the final determination for picking which four teams will be selected for the playoff. The ranking will be more of a guide as to how the committee is viewing the season’s top teams. The ultimate decision on which teams will be placed in the playoff will be done behind a closed-door meeting, just as it is in basketball.

College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock has also said the selection committee will not have any say on whether conferences should utilize eight or nine-game schedules.
