Report: Notre Dame paid Charlie Weis about as much as Brian Kelly in 2012

Kansas head coach Charlie Weis has not coached at Notre Dame since 2009, but the Irish are still paying Weis for his services.

According to a report by USA Today, Weis was paid $2.1 million by Notre Dame as a result of the contract buyout terms when Weis was relieved of his coaching duties in South Bend. Weis will be receiving annual payments for his termination through 2015, according to the terms of his termination. Only one other person at Notre Dame was paid more across the entire university (vice president and chief investment officer Scott Malpass).

Current head coach Brian Kelly was paid more than $600,000 in bonuses by Notre Dame in 2012. According to the report, Kelly was paid $1.5 million and eligible for extra compensation that does not need to be reported by the university. Athletics director Jack Swarbrick was paid more than $1.1 million.

Weis put together a record of 35-27 as Notre Dame head coach, but the wins were front-loaded with 19 wins in the first two seasons on the job. After 2006, Notre Dame was 16-21 in the final three years under Weis. Notre Dame hired Kelly from Cincinnati to be the next head coach after parting ways with Weis, who returned to the NFL as an assistant for the Kansas City Chiefs before returning as an offensive coordinator at Florida and being named head coach at Kansas in 2012.
