Duke lacrosse player transferring to SMU... to play football

Unless it involves the great Jim Brown, lacrosse and football don’t normally get mentioned in the same library let alone the same book. A Duke grad student, however, is set to add his name to that very exclusive list.

Lacrosse player Chris Hipps, NFL.com‘s Gil Brandt is reporting, is set to transfer from Duke to SMU, where he will join the Mustangs football team. The move comes two days after Hipps helped lead the Blue Devils to its second consecutive national lacrosse championship.

Because Hipps will be a graduate transfer, he’ll be eligible to play immediately for the Mustangs in 2014 in what will be his final season of NCAA eligibility.

Hipps’ original intention was to play both football and lacrosse at Duke, although that plan quickly evaporated as his lacrosse career took off.

At least at the highs school level, Hipps showed he had the potential to possibly help the Mustangs as he caught 86 passes for 1,580 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior at Highland Park (Tex.) High School.
