Red River Rivalry staying put in Cotton Bowl through 2025

The name may be changing but the venue, thankfully, is not. The Red River Rivalry between Oklahoma and Texas will remain in the Cotton Bowl Stadium at the Texas State Fair through at least 2025 according to a report by The Dallas Morning News.

“The schools appreciate the venue,” said former chairman of the State Fair of Texas Pete Schenkel. “It’s more of an event, than it is a game.”

These words bring a tear to my eye. Somebody gets it. Somebody out there understands that not everything in college football needs to be sold to the highest bidder. Well, almost. There is a new corporate sponsor for the official game’s title, but at least the game is staying put in the historic venue instead of moving to Arlington, which has become a major player in college football in terms of venues the last few years. It was considered though.

“There’s no question that’s a nice stadium out at AT&T, but we have a nice stadium, too,” Schenkel said, before pausing. “This is such a nice tradition.”

Score this as a major victory for tradition.
