Georgia Tech locks in Paul Johnson for four more years

Before he leads his team out to the ACC Championship Game for the second time in three seasons, Paul Johnson decided to accept a contract extension offer from Georgia Tech. It may have taken longer than usual to get the contract work done, but Johnson is now locked in at Georgia Tech for four more seasons.

“I am excited that we were able to work out a contract extension,” Johnson said in a statement released by Georgia Tech. “I appreciate the support of our fans, students and alumni during my time here. My family and I are looking forward to being a part of Georgia Tech for a long time.”

Johnson has established a record fo 58-34 over the course of his seven seasons at Georgia Tech after leaving Navy. Today marks the third appearance in the ACC Championship Game. The 2014 ACC Coach of the Year has won the award three times. The contract extension is well-deserved based on that alone, but ending the regular season with a thrilling victory over in-state rival Georgia from the SEC certainly is nice too.

Georgia Tech faces Florida State in the ACC Championship Game later today. Florida State is playing for a spot in the College Football Playoff. Georgia Tech is likely heading to the Orange Bowl no matter what happens, but Johnson’s Yellow Jackets look to have the best chance to cause some playoff controversy on Championship Saturday.
