Arkansas suspends two defenders for Texas Bowl

Arkansas will be down two defenders as it renews its Southwest Conference rivalry with Texas in the Houston-based Texas Bowl later this month. The program announced Saturday that cornerback Carroll Washington and safety Rohan Gaines will miss the game due to the dreaded unspecified violation of team policy.

The suspension is an especially big bummer for Washington, a senior, who will now watch his eligibility expire from the stands. He played in all 12 games this season and recorded 17 tackles.

Gaines recorded 59 tackles in 12 games and posted a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in the Hogs’ win over Ole Miss. Head coach Bret Bielema said Gaines could rejoin the team in January “if he adheres to all the things we ask him to do.”

Arkansas and Texas will meet for the first time since 2008, and just the fifth time since the Razorbacks joined the SEC, on Dec. 29 at 8 p.m. ET (ESPN).
