Maxx out: Gophers TE leaving early for NFL

In a move that’s been expected, Minnesota has officially learned it will definitely have to replace a key piece of its offensive puzzle this season.

Friday afternoon, Maxx Williams announced that he is indeed leaving his remaining eligibility on the table and will make himself available for the 2015 NFL draft. Williams actually has two years of eligibility remaining as he’s a redshirt sophomore.

“We appreciate all that Maxx and his family have done for the program,” said head coach Jerry Kill in a statement. “They are great people and we wish nothing but the best for Maxx as he begins his professional career. Maxx has been an integral part in laying the foundation for our program and has helped move our team forward.”

Williams played in 25 games for Minnesota and ends his collegiate career with 61 receptions for 986 yards and 13 touchdowns. This season, Williams’ 36 catches for 569 yards and eight touchdowns all led the Gophers.

Just the third sophomore to be named a John Mackey Award finalist, Williams was a first-team All-American according to numerous media outlets.
