One of the constant stories of LSU football in the 2014 season was the state of the quarterback position in Baton Rouge. Get ready for a sequel in 2015.
LSU head coach Les Miles says the spring will see the opening of a brand new quarterback competition between Anthony Jennings and Brandon Harris.
“This will be a very competitive spring,” Miles said, according to The Advocate. “Out of spring, I’d like to pick another starter. It could be Anthony. It could be, certainly, Brandon. Competition will have to continue there.”
Harris started getting more starting reps in practices later in the season, at which point Miles suggested he was setting up a decision on the future of the position moving into the spring, so everything is going according to plan for the Mad Hatter.
Harris arrived on campus last January to get a jump on his football career, and the extra time with the team in the spring helped prepare him to see playing time during the season, including a start against Auburn. That did not go so well, and he did not play in LSU’s bowl loss to the Irish.
Jennings got the start for the Tigers in the Music City Bowl against Notre Dame. In the game, Jennings completed half of his passes (7-of-14) for 151 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, but it was a how of why LSU might benefit from having a competition in 2015 rather than guarantee the starting job to Jennings right from the start.
Jennings is far from a clear favorite to win the starting nod out of the spring. Harris brings plenty of potential and another spring of practices should only help to improve his play. Will it be enough to get the starting job at the end of the spring, or could Miles let the quarterback decision linger over the summer?
