Another day, another college coach heading to the NFL. This time it is Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery.
On Tuesday Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops released a statement on the school’s website confirming Montgomery is leaving to coach in the NFL. It turns out a January promotion for Montgomery was not enough to keep him in Norman.
“This is a rare opportunity for Jerry and his family to join one of the finest organizations in the National Football League,” Stoops said in his released statement. “I appreciate the positive impact that Jerry has made with our defensive line the past two seasons, as well as his many other contributions to Oklahoma Football. The NFL is getting a fine man and a very talented football coach. I support Jerry’s decision to further his career goals working with one of the most stable and successful franchises in pro football.”
It has not been reported which NFL team is adding Montgomery to the staff, although that information should become available rather quickly now that Oklahoma has spilled the beans.
As for the Sooners, Stoops is on the lookout for a replacement to fill the vacancy on his coaching staff.
