ACC’s John Swofford on board with College Football Playoff expansion

His conference may not have been left out of the first College Football Playoff last season, but ACC commissioner John Swofford is in favor of ensuring it does not get left out in the future. Speaking at the ACC Football Kickoff in North Carolina Monday, Swofford voiced his support for the expansion of the College Football Playoff, currently limited to four teams.

“In a perfect world, if you only want to talk about football, and only about a playoff, yeah, eight would probably be better,” Swofford said Monday.

Swofford merely dipped his toes in support fo the expansion of the playoff though. After that comment, Swofford buckled down in support fo the four-team format and sticking to the company line from the College Football Playoff offices suggesting the four-team format will be unchanged during the course of the current 12-year contract. It still remains likely we will see an expanded playoff field at some point in the future. It has been and remains a matter of “when,” not “if.”

Florida State represented the ACC in the first College Football Playoff. The Seminoles lost to Oregon in the Rose Bowl semifinal game.
