Beavers dismiss LB suspended for all of 2014

Expected to be a key piece of Oregon State’s defensive puzzle in 2014, Darrell Songy instead spent the entire season sidelined because of a suspension. Expected to seriously challenge for a starting job coming off the suspension in 2015, Songy is instead on the outside of the OSU football program looking in.

University officials have confirmed that Songy has been dismissed from the football team and will not play for the Beavers this coming season. The Oregonian reported that Songy failed three drug tests leading up to the 2014 season, which led to his suspension; the linebacker not fulfilling “additional behavior requirements” stemming from those failed drug tests led to his dismissal, a source told the paper’s Gina Mizell.

The junior college route is likely the next step for Songy, although a return to Corvallis after serving his lower-level penance wouldn’t be in the cards.

Songy, just a two-star member of OSU’s 2013 recruiting class, played in 12 games as a true freshman, mainly on special teams, and was one of just three true freshmen to play for the Beavers in 2013. His 12 tackles on special teams were good for second on the team.
