Tar Heels reinstate one suspended CB, set to do the same to another

The punitive measures for two member of the North Carolina football program have either come to an end or on the verge of doing so.

In a release, Larry Fedora announced that Mike Hughes has been reinstated to the Tar Heels and will play against Virginia Saturday. The head coach also revealed that M.J. Stewart will be reinstated Sunday.

“Based on everything I know at this time, it was the appropriate action,” Fedora said in a portion of his statement. “They still have to go through the judicial process.”

Hughes was charged in mid-October with one count of misdemeanor assault inflicting serious injury and Stewart with one count of misdemeanor assault and battery. A fight that led to the arrest and charges stemmed from an incident at a frat house; the alleged victims went to police 11 days after the Oct. 4 incident to inform them that they had decided to press charges.

Hughes will end up serving a two-game suspension, Stewart a two-game suspension.

Stewart has started all five games this season and leads the Tar Heels in interceptions with three. He also leads the teams in passes defensed (seven) and passes broken up (four).

As a true freshman, Hughes has seen action in every game in 2015.
