Caleb Wilson: From walk-on USC TE to scholarship UCLA TE

Sure, just go ahead and add a little bit of intrigue to the Left Coast crosstown rivalry.

Defensive line coach Chris Wilson was not retained by new USC head coach Clay Helton late last year. Shortly thereafter, Wilson’s son, walk-on Trojans tight end Caleb Wilson, followed his father out the door, although the younger Wilson had not yet decided on a landing spot. That changed Wednesday as it was reported that Wilson had decided to continue his collegiate playing career at, of course, UCLA.

According to Adam Kramer of Bleacher Report, Wilson "[w]ill go on scholarship when he arrives” at UCLA. There’s also this nugget from the Los Angeles Daily News:

Because he was not a scholarship player with the Trojans, Wilson is not subject to the Pac-12 rule dictating that intra-conference transfers must sit out a year and lose an additional year of eligibility.

Instead, Wilson will simply be forced to sit out the 2016 season, and will then have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2017.

Wilson, the Daily News noted, had originally committed to play quarterback at Old Dominion as a Class of 2015 recruit, but ultimately opted to walk on as a tight end at USC instead. As a quarterback coming out of high school in California, Rivals.com had the 6-5, 210-pound Wilson rated as a two-star prospect.
