Report: Alabama lineman Richie Petitbon undergoes surgery after tearing ACL

It appears that the field competing for a starting job along Alabama’s offensive line this spring has been pared by one thanks to a rather significant injury.

While the football program has yet to confirm it, al.com is reporting that offensive lineman Richie Petitbon sustained a torn ACL during the Tide’s scrimmage this past Saturday. The same sources who confirmed the injury also confirmed that the lineman has already undergone surgery to repair the damage.

More than likely, the injury means the redshirt freshman will miss the entire 2016 season.

A four-star member of the Tide’s 2015 recruiting class, Petitbon was rated as the No. 4 offensive guard in the country; the No. 1 player at any position in the District of Columbia; and the No. 51 player overall according to Rivals.com. The 6-4, 300-pound Petitbon took a redshirt his true freshman season.

Prior to the injury this spring, al.com writes, “Petitbon was one of several players competing for a starting offensive guard spot with both jobs up for grabs.”

UPDATED 12:13 p.m. ET: In response to the report, Alabama released the following statement attributed to head coach Nick Saban.

Richie Petitbon suffered a knee injury during Saturday’s scrimmage. He has undergone successful surgery with Dr. Lyle Cain in Birmingham and we anticipate a full recovery.”
