Michigan starting LT Grant Newsome’s injury ‘doesn’t look good’

Michigan’s knock down, drag out win over Wisconsin could prove to be costly for its offensive line.

In the first half of the 14-7 win, starting left tackle Grant Newsome went down with an injury to his right knee and didn’t return. Following the game, Jim Harbaugh was decidedly pessimistic about Newsome’s status for the near future, and stated that surgery will likely be necessary to repair whatever damage was done to the joint.

“It doesn’t look good,” the head coach said by way of mlive.com. “He was blocking on the edge and, what he told me, was he got cut right at his knee -- I don’t know if it was a helmet or what it was.

“But yeah (I think) a surgical procedure will be needed.”

Newsome started the first five games of the season after starting one game as a freshman in 2015. At least initially, he’ll be replaced in the starting lineup by redshirt sophomore Juwann Bushell-Beatty.
