Suspended Baylor lineman arrested for criminal trespassing

Already suspended by his football program and university, Rami Hammad has dug himself an even deeper legal hole.

According to the Waco Tribune-Herald, the erstwhile Baylor offensive lineman was arrested Wednesday night on two counts of criminal trespassing. Both of those charges are misdemeanors.

Other than the trespassing occurred on the BU campus, no details of what led to the arrest and charges were made available.

Hammad was arrested in early August on a felony charge after allegedly stalking an ex-girlfriend on campus, following her around to classes on multiple occasions. Shortly after that arrest, Hammad was indefinitely suspended from the Bears football program; a month later, Hammad was suspended from the university, pending the results of the police investigation.

In between, a damning ESPN report from its Outside the Lines program claimed that Hammad played the entire 2015 season despite two women coming forward to Baylor’s Title IX office with complaints of inappropriate sexual contact. Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported, "[t]he Title IX coordinator at Baylor University... resigned over a disagreement in her role to oversee changes at the school following claims it mishandled sexual assault cases for several years.”

“He’s not been allowed to come back until the decision has been made [by the university],” interim head coach Jim Grobe said back in early September when asked about Hammad’s future with the program. “If it came back he had no involvement or culpability in anything, that’s when we’d have to consider bringing him back. ...

“We’d like for the wheels of justice to move more quickly but they typically don’t. So from a football standpoint and an athletic program standpoint, we have to stand back and let the process take place. If they give him the green light he’ll come back to school, but that’s not in our hands right now.”

Hammad transferred to Baylor from Texas in August of 2014. After sitting out the 2014 season, Hammad played in 13 games last season. He had exited spring this year as the Bears’ starting right guard.
