Report: Texas to fire Charlie Strong; school denies report

Texas will formally fire head coach Charlie Strong, according to a report Sunday from the Austin American-Statesman, though the final decision may not come until Monday.

Of course, following Saturday’s 24-21 overtime loss to Kansas, the “when” is now just a formality because the “if” is now painfully obvious.

The loss -- Kansas’s first Big 12 win in more than two years -- dropped Texas to 5-6 on the year and 16-20 in Strong’s 3-year tenure. That 16-20 mark equates to the worst winning percentage in Texas history, and the ‘Horns are in danger of posting back-to-back-to-back losing seasons for the first time in the program’s modern era.

Strong is scheduled to meet with the media on Monday morning so, unless the burnt orange brass wanted to appear cold and heartless to a coach that, while flawed on the field, has always been a good soldier for the university, a decision was needed to remove the proverbial sword from swinging above his head.

“It will happen for sure,” a source told the paper. “The question is when.”

Texas will close its 2016 regular season Friday in Austin against TCU.

Update: Texas has issued a statement denying there’s anything to see here.
