No. 5 Washington jumps out to huge lead at halftime in the Apple Cup

This year’s Apple Cup was supposed to be one of the biggest in series history, with a Pac-12 title game berth and possibly more on the line. After just a half of play on Friday however, it may be on its way to becoming one of the biggest blowouts in the game’s history.

Washington returned to form against their rivals and looked like one of the best teams in the country while jumping out to a 35-10 lead over Washington State in a game that was all Huskies from the opening whistle.

Quarterback Jake Browning had all day to throw against the Cougars defense, racking up 243 yards and three touchdowns in just two quarters worth of work. Tailback Myles Gaskin didn’t need to run the ball all that much as a result of the passing game working on every snap and finished with just 19 yards and a score. Lavon Coleman added another touchdown on the ground late in the second quarter.

Wazzu signal-caller Luke Falk had to do his best to rally the team from a 28-3 hole in the first quarter but threw for a surprisingly low 102 yards and an interception in the end zone just before halftime.

After so much build up coming into today, you wonder how the home team is going to respond after a rough past four quarters against the Pac-12’s top two teams. Given the way things went in the first half though, it may very well be a true Black Friday on the Palouse if Mike Leach’s squad doesn’t pick things up against their very good in-state rivals.
